Fasting is 4th pillar of the Islam and it is mandatory for all Muslims. The real world in Arabic for fasting is “Swam” and it means “To refrain”. During day time in Ramadan (from Fajra to Maghrib) Muslims are prohibited from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse. But Swam doesn’t mean only this. As the word Swam means “To refrain” and Ramadan is to refrain from every kind of evil actions and even thoughts and words. In Ramadan Muslims fasts to get closer to Allah. Is Fasting is Compulsory for Everyone in Ramadan
“[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] – then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] – a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess – it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew. (The Holy Quran 2:184)
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful. (The Holy Quran 2:185)
From the above versus it is clear that Allah wants us to do fasting if we are capable. So if you are on journey or suffering from some disease you can complete the fasts on some other days. And if you still cannot complete the fast you can instead feed a poor for every day of fasting.
